The Fraser Coast is home to a beautiful biodiversity and some great places to check these out are at the Great Sandy Biosphere and the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary.
If you want to explore the rich waters of the Great Sandy region, the Great Sandy Biosphere is a spot you surely shouldn’t miss! It was awarded a Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO which is the global organisation that awards World Heritage sites. Because of this, the biosphere is a protected natural resource that aims to balance conservation and sustainable development.
The wonderful thing about the Great Sandy Biosphere is that it is a major breeding site for endangered marine turtles as well as a home to 7,558 recorded species of flora and fauna. It is also a Dugong (sea manatee) sanctuary. Seasonally, it is an internationally declared feeding ground for migratory birds. If you’re interested in observing ancient dune chronological sequencing, this is the place to go! During whale watching season, you can get a chance to see transitory whales on their way to migration.
Back on the Fraser Coast, the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for land-based biodiversity. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by Charley, the Long-Billed Corella. Then take a walk through the free flight aviary and sanctuary. Here, you can encounter Australian animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, emus, turtles and native birds. Feeling daring? You can check out the reptiles and even get a chance to hold a python! You will also see and learn about Australia’s largest land predator, the Dingo.
